Gestures

Russians use a number of hand gestures most Americans aren’t familiar with. Here are three of the most popular:

figa

Figa or kukish is when you make a fist with your thumb sticking through your middle and index finger. It’s considered rude and indicates your refusal to do or give something.

vipyem

Tapping your throat with your index finger means “let’s drink.” According to one legend, Peter the Great would reward a particularly skillful carpenter or shipbuilder by tattooing the royal insignia on the man’s neck. This would allow the person to walk into any drinking establishment, tap the tattoo, and obtain free alcohol.

throat

Making a slashing motion across your throat with your palm down can be a threatening gesture, as it is in the USA, but it can also mean you’ve had too much of something. Have you had too much to eat? This gesture can mean, “I’m stuffed.” It can also mean that you have too much to deal with.
