While there are many types of flavored vodkas, most Russians prefer pure, unflavored varieties. Despite this, unflavored vodkas do not taste the same. Most Russians can tell good vodka from bad, just as an experienced sommelier can appreciate the nuances of different varieties of wine.

In Russia, merely sipping on vodka is considered ridiculous. Most Russians prefer to drink vodka ice cold, from small shot glasses. It’s normal to down a glass in one swallow, followed immediately by a small snack called zakuska.
